Time to schedule internships

As most of us here at Ohio State have an idea of what our schedules will look like for spring quarter, its time to start considering the possibility of an internship.
Internships are one of the best ways to serve our party, while developing the relationships and skills that you will need to succeed in politics and in life. These skills and contacts can often lead to employment, and the people that you meet make particularly good references.

This is a particularly important time to intern, as the 2010 elections are just around the corner and Democrats need our help more than ever.

You can also get class credit. If you are a political science student, there are two options. First Poli Sci 589 is a major level class with a class room portion. Second, Poli Sci 489 is a non-major level class and does not have a class room portion, you just write a final paper.

For students interested in credit for other areas (like Communications for example), contact Andrew Ashbrook at internship@osudems.com.

Now is a great time to begin the process of obtaining an internship so that by the beginning of Spring quarter everything will be ready to go.

Some options for internships include:

Campaigns
Its about time for the 2010 campaigns to get started in full swing. These are a great way to get to know candidates and work towards strengthening the democratic party. If you are interested in any particular candidate, please contact Andrew Ashbrook at internship@osudems.com and we will get you involved with the campaign.

Strickland For Governor
The Strickland campaign is looking for a new media intern. They are interviewing candidates this week so if you are interested please reply to Andrew Ashbrook at internship@osudems.com ASAP. This will be a great opportunity to get into state politics and has the possibility of becoming a paid position.

The Ohio Democratic Party

Organizing Interns will have an important role in the Field Department of ODP. All interns will participate in multiple facets of the campaign process, including field experiences, direct and online work, and various political operations. Activities may include direct voter contact, new media, community outreach, volunteer recruitment, event attendance, planning and management, data management and general office duties. Internships are unpaid.

Candidates should have the following skills:
- Plenty of initiative and a willingness to learn
- Hard working, independent (yet team-oriented), and well organized
- Punctual and reliable
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- IT literate: familiar with Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer

For more info, or if you are interested, contact John Parker at jparker@ohiodems.org.

There is also an opening for a research intern for the ODP. Duties would include donor and opposition research as well as compiling information and creating reports. If interested, contact Andrew Ashbrook at internship@osudems.com

Franklin County Democratic Party -

- The Franklin County Democratic Party is currently seeking College Democrats for their campaign internship program. Students who participate in this program will be trained on the various aspects of a campaign operation including voter targeting, field development, fundraising, and neighborhood organizing.
- College Democrats participating in this program will be working with the county party in developing their 2010 General Election plan, and will have the option of being placed on a candidate's campaign at the end of their internship.
- No campaign experience is necessary for these internships, and they are unpaid.

For more info, or if you are interested, contact Zach Roberts at Zach.roberts1@gmail.com.

Senate Campaigns

The campaigns for both Lee Fisher and Jennifer Brunner are in need of interns. If you are interested please contact Andrew Ashbrook at internship@osudems.com.

Ohio House of Representatives

The Ohio House of Representatives is always in need of a few interns. You would get to work closely with a House Representative and his legislative aid. It provides an excellent opportunity to see how politics work and meet your legislators. Duties would include office and clerical work, writing letters to constituents, and taking notes for the Representative.
